LONDON: Malaysia’s hopes of grabbing the first medal from the 2012 Olympics were dashed as mistakes by Pandelela Rinong and Leong Mun Yee, starting in the third round, caused them to finish in seventh spot in Women’s Synchronised 10 metre Platform final.
In the event held at the London Aquatics Centre here Tuesday, Pandelela and Mun Yee collected a total of 308.52 points to finish in the second last spot of spot out of eight participating countries.
In the first dicipline, the reverse dive, the Malaysian duo collected 52.80 points, back dive (54.00), forward 3 1/2 sommersault (70.20), inward 3 1/2 sommersault (60.48) and back 2 1/2 sommersault (71.04).
After securing third overall position in the second dicipline, the Malaysian duo seemed to lose concentration in the third dicipline which saw their rank drop to number five and finally they clinched the seven spot after the final dive event.
Chinese divers Chen Roulin and Wang Hao won the gold with 368.40 points, Mexica’s Alejandra Crozco Loza and Paola Espinosa Sanchez grabbed the silver (343.32) while Roseline Filion/Meaghan Benfeito of Canada took the bronze (337.62).
Pandelela when met after the competition admitted Tuesday’s performance was not their best as they were under a lot of pressure.
“We start making mistakes in the third dicipline and continued (to make mistakes) in the fourth and fifth (dives). After the third dicipline, we just continued what we had to do but it was too late to better our position,” she said.
Mun Yee also admitted that after securing the third overall position in the second dicipline, they were under immense pressure to better it to ensure a medal.
“Its not that were not synchronised in our diving.
But the pressure, high expectations, seemed eat ourselves,” she said.
Malaysia’s national diving coach from China, Yang Zhuliang said it was not his charges best performance Tuesday.
“Too much pressure especially on Pandelela.
Maybe the higher expectation on her because she also will be taking part in the women’s individual synchronised 10m platform on Friday,” he said. — BERNAMA
Malaysian Tigers would be more competitive in the Southeast Asian level — Coach
KUALA LUMPUR: After competing the friendly matches with two outfits from the English Premier League (EPL), Arsenal FC and Manchester City FC, national football coach Datuk K Rajagobal hopes the Malaysian Tigers will be able to be more competitive in the Southeast Asian level.
Manchester City in a friendly match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here Monday night, defeated Malaysia 3-1 in their first appearance in Malaysia as part of their 2012 summer tour.
Rajagobal said he had expected the match against EPL’s champion, Manchester City to be difficult to the national team.
“After watching them in the pre-season, their physical (condition) and the combination were very strong… and the speed when they attacked, especially Carlos Teves, Sergio Aguero, and the two mid-fielders.
“The Malaysians had to play with the strong world class players and they did well,” he told reporters after the match, Monday night.
On July 24, Malaysia lost to Arsenal, 1-2 in a friendly match at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
“I’m happy with both matches which were really good test matches and the players learnt a lot from these two matches,” said Rajagobal.
Meanwhile, Manchester City FC’s head coach, Roberto Mancini said he was pleased with his boys’ performances last night and hoped to come back here next year.
“Both teams played good, I hope we can come back next year. I’m sure that the national team, with the good management, will be better in the future.
“All the players were the same, we tried to maintain the momentum,” said Mancini, who revamped his team in the second half of the match last night. — Bernama

Manchester City victory over Malaysia XI
KUALA LUMPUR: English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester City FC beat Malaysia 3-1 in a friendly match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here Monday night.
This was the first time Manchester City are making an appearance in Malaysia as part of their 2012 Summer Tour.
The team dubbed as “The Blue Moon Rising” with household names like Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Yaya Toure were quick off the blocks when referee Mohd Amirul Izwan Yaacob blew the starting whistle.
The visitors opened accounts through Arguero in the 17th minute when he dribbled past a feeble Malaysian defence that paled in comparison to the side that faced Arsenal last week.
After the breather, Roberto Manchini’s boys continued to double their attack and Carlos Tevez managed to score the team’s second goal in 47th minute.
Five minutes later, Malaysian goalkeeper Mohd Farizal Marlias had to pick the ball from the back of the net once again when Adam Johnson received the ball from Aguero and squeezed in the third goal for Manchester City.
Despite facing a more experienced side, the Malaysian side under coach Datuk K. Rajagobal managed to stage a late fight-back through a solo effort by Azamuddin Mohd Akil, three minutes before the end.
Azamuddin managed to dribble past two Manchester City defenders – Pablo Zabaleta and Kolo Toure – before putting the ball past substitute goalkeeper Eirik Johansen.
Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) President Sultan Ahmad Shah then presented the medals and trophy to both teams. — BERNAMA
Lee taken all the way
LONDON: Former world number one Lee Chong Wei survived a huge scare before booking his place in the last 16 of the men’s Singles, london2012.com reported.
The top seed was taken to three games by Finn Ville Lang in a late-night thriller at Wembley Arena, but produced a strong finish to prevail 21-8 14-21 21-11.
Lee had been troubled in the build-up to London 2012 by an ankle injury and showed signs of rustiness as world number 45 Lang fought back in the second game.
Although the Malaysian eventually came through by winning 10 of the last 11 points, his performance will offer encouragement to his rivals, particularly reigning champion Lin Dan.
Lin, the Chinese superstar and second seed, looked in superb form as he brushed aside Ireland’s Scott Evans earlier in the day.
Lee, who plans to retire after the Games, said: ‘I am only mentally strong because I have had an injury and I am still not 100%.
‘But I had nothing to lose and I just tried my best.’

The day’s highest-profile casualty was Japan’s eighth seed Kenichi Tago, who crashed out after a shock loss to Sri Lanka’s Niluka Karunaratne.
The big guns in the women’s Singles had no such trouble.
Chinese pair Wang Yihan and Wang Xin, seeds one and two respectively, both reached the last 16 with comfortable wins in a morning session.
Visitors in the afternoon were denmied a potentially thrilling finish in a men’s Doubles match between Thailand’s Bodin Isara and Maneepong Jongjit and the Poles Adam Cwalina and Michal Logosz.
The Polish pair were trailing 17-15 in a deciding game when Logosz snapped an Achilles tendon landing awkwardly after jumping. He left the arena in a wheelchair and the Thais won by default.
America’s 2005 world champions Howard Bach, 33, and Tony Gunawan, 37, announced their retirement after going down to a third successive loss in the men’s Doubles, this time to Japan’s Naoki Kawamae and Shoji Sato.
Korean Lee Yong-dae saw his hopes of defending the Mixed Doubles title ended as he and new partner Ha Jung-eun lost 21-15 21-12 to Danes Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl.

Chong Wei, the world number is expected to go through an easy passage to the semi-final after being drawn against world number 45, Ville Lang from Finland in Group A.
Barring any upsets, Chong Wei is expected to meet China's rising star Chen Long in the semis and probably meet defending champion Lin Dan of China in the final.
Former world number one pair Kien Keat-Boon Heong are drawn in Group D together with world number one pair Chung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae from South Korea, Howard Bach/Tony Gunawan (US/Indonesia) and Japanese pair Naoki Kawamae/Shoji Sato.
Mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying, making their Olympics debut, will certainly have an uphill task after being drawn in Group D against world number two pair Xu Chen/Ma Jin from China, Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam from Thailand and Chen Hung Ling/Cheng Wan Hsing from Taiwan.
The Olympics format for singles will see 64 players divided in 16 groups comprising four players each while the top player from each group will advance to the next round.
The doubles competition will see 16 pairs divided into four groups and the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, deputy Youth and Sports minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim said based on the draw made for the Olympics Monday, Chong Wei, 29, must treat every game seriously and not just consider the round robin matches as a warm up although his opponents may be weaker.
"At the Olympics, every player will be up for the challenge...so, he (Chong Wei) must be focused," he told reporters after launching the 'Station of Life-The Flame of Sporting Spirit' programme organised by Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad at the Bukit Jalil LRT Station here Tuesday.
The programme that kicked off last will continue until Aug 12 and aimed at turning the station as a venue for the promotion of the Olympics to commuters. - Bernama

Diving squad, Suryani optimistic of winning Olympic medals
SEPANG: The diving squad and national shooter Suryani Mohamed Taibi are optimistic of bringing back medals despite the various challenges to be faced at the London Olympics.
Although the diving squad were surprised that officials from Europe dominated the jury panel, Pandelela Rinong said the squad must avoid making minor errors during the preliminary rounds of the heats.
Referring to the complete list of the jury panel obtained from the website, Europe had the largest number of representatives with nine officials all together, including one from the host nation, Great Britain, she said.
"To me what's important is to make a good dive to convince the jury to give the best mark," Pandelela told reporters when met at the KL International Airport, here Monday night.
Pandelela and seven other divers, national swimmer, Koo Chai Lin, national fencing athlete, Yu Peng Kean and Suryani left for London Monday night to compete in the Olympic.
The seven divers are Bryan Nickson Lomas, Huang Qiang, Yeoh Ken Nee, Cheong Jun Hoong, Ng Yan Yee, Traisy Vivien Tukiet and Leong Mun Yee.
Meanwhile, Suryani, who is in her eighth month of pregnancy, said she would be competing in the women's 10m Air Rifle event.
"I consider the championship as any other that I have participated in previously. I don't want to give too much focus on it.
To me, adequate mental preparation is enough to overcome whatever obstacles," she said. - Bernama

Mum-to-be targets gold
Kuala Lumpur: When Malaysia's first women's Olympic shooter takes aim in London, she will offer a silent prayer to Allah to keep her unborn child from kicking until the mum-to-be can pull the trigger.
Nur Suryani Mohamad Taibi, the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and a navy logistics officer, is due in September, but that-and the concerns of friends and family-has not stopped her. Not yet, any way.
Her bubbly personality belies what she calls a "stubborn" streak.
She kept training through morning sickness and a rapidly expanding belly, and with the Games opening on Friday, she is just days away from her dream.
"Most people said I was crazy and selfish because they think I am jeopardising my baby's health," said the 29-year-old, who is expecting for the first time.
"My husband said grab it as this is a rare chance which may not come again. Also, I am the mother. I know what I can do. I am a stubborn person."
Nur Suryani is not the first expectant mother to compete in the Olympic Games.
But at nearly eight months, the 10-metre air rifle competitor will surely be one of the most heavily pregnant Olympians in history.
And she will smash the record books if she wins gold-Malaysia has never taken an Olympic crown.
Readying for a recent training session, she squeezed her bulging abdomen into the heavy body suit and jacket worn by competitors to aid stability before shouldering her rifle.
Standing as still as a statue, Nur Suryani takes a deep breath before each shot, puts the target in her sights and squeezes the trigger.
She no longer suffers from morning sickness, but shooting requires an extremely steady hand and body, so much so that many shooters time their shots between heartbeats, when the body is most stable.
A key concern therefore will be whether her unborn child-a girl whom she will name Dayana Widyan-kicks at the wrong time.
"I am able to shoot as normal. But a kick from the baby stops me from pulling the trigger," she said.
She recites verses from the Koran-Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country to calm the unborn girl, she said.
"Every morning I talk to her and I say: 'Mummy is going for training.
Please remain calm. Don't kick.' But she was naughty this morning," she said, bursting into laughter.
But the confident Malaysian, who won Asian Games bronze in 2010 and is ranked 47th in the world, insists she is as fit as ever and that her scores have remained consistent in training even as her pregnancy has advanced.
She has adjusted her stance slightly to accommodate the physical changes and says that the extra weight actually has the added benefit of increasing stability.
"But if the baby kicks I have to breathe easy and let the baby calm down before shooting," she said.
Nur Suryani's husband Marhazli Mokhtar, a police officer, will accompany her to London to help settle her nerves-and in case the baby arrives prematurely.
"I just want to perform my best at the Games. If gold comes, thanks to God and my baby. Who knows?
Miracles can happen," she said. - AFP

Arsenal Come From Behind To Gun Down Malaysia 2-1
KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) -- English Premier League outfit Arsenal FC came from behind to gun down Malaysia 2-1 in an action packed friendly match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, here Tuesday night.
The win was the second on the trot recorded by the English side, dubbed the 'Gunners', after having won 4-0 at the same venue during their Asian Tour last year.
The national side dubbed as 'Harimau Malaya' gave the Gunners an early scare through Mohd Safee Sali's half-volley in the 5th minute but it was well saved by the visitors' goalkeeper Vitor Mannone.
The Gunners increased their tempo and forward Marouane Chamakh almost opened accounts for the English side in the 8th minute but it was pushed out by Mohd Farizal Marlias in the Malaysian goal.
The national side coached by Datuk K. Rajagobal then took the lead in the 46th minute when defender Mohd Azmi Muslim unleashed an unstoppable shot from 25 metres into the top corner, leaving Mannone rooted to his spot.
Startled by the score, Gunners coach Arsene Wenger revamped his whole squad in the second half but the Malaysian defence marshalled by Mohamad Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak and S. Subramaniam stood their ground, preventing every effort from their speedy strikers, especially England striker Theo Walcott.
The Gunners' new signing from Germany, Thomas Eisfeld however, levelled the score in the 87th minute before Chuks Aneke turned hero for the Gunners when he scored in the final minute, sending thousands of local fans who filled the stadium, disappointed.
Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) President Sultan Ahmad Shah then presented the medals and trophy to both teams.
The Gunners will wrap up their Asian Tour with another friendly match against Kitchee FC of Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Stadium on Sunday.
